For centuries, women have pampered themselves with
milk baths, made famous by Cleopatra. But you don’t
have to be royalty to enjoy the beneficial hydrating
and moisturizing qualities of a milk bath. Just add
powdered milk or buttermilk, or a special blend, to
your warm bath, and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. The
lactic acid in milk is a natural exfoliating agent, so dead
cells can be scrubbed away to reveal your own baby-
soft skin. Be sure to have a fluffy towel ready to
swaddle yourself in comfort.
Long day hiking or skiing? The best bath for you includes ocean mineral salts or Epsom salts to draw toxins from the body, offering temporary relief from aches and pains. Add herbs—such as peppermint, wintergreen, eucalyptus or rosemary essential oils—to boost circulation, warm your muscles and reduce inflammation. Using slightly hotter water than usual helps ease muscle spasms and tension. Before your bath, brew a cup of relaxing tea—peppermint is soothing, especially for the digestive tract—then add a few drops of kava kava or valerian extract to both bath water and tea for extra muscle relaxation and pain relief.
