Herbs such as ginseng, licorice and ginger are known to promote energy. Try sipping teas made with these herbs during your coffee break. As for coffee, the jury is still out. Studies have shown that it can help increase focus and give you a slight boost, but because it stresses the adrenal glands, too much could have you crashing later. A study in the journal Sleep, however, shows that small amounts of caffeine spaced throughout the day could help keep you alert. So if you need your “cup of ambition” in the morning, just don’t overdo it. Marci Shimoff, author of Happy for No Reason (Free Press, 2008), puts it this way: “After drinking a cup of coffee, you feel alert and upbeat, but that high reaches its peak in 30 to 60 minutes, and then down you go.” If you don’t like herbal teas, try decaffeinated green tea
